Right. Hope also played Sorrowful Jones in a remake of Little Miss Marker and that has it's moments as well.

A minor one y'all can checkout is Pope of Greenwich Village with i think Mickey Rourke.

" Charlie and his troublesome cousin Paulie decide to steal $150000 in order to back a "sure thing" race horse that Paulie has inside information on. The aftermath of the robbery gets them into serious trouble with the local Mafia boss and the corrupt New York City police department "

"The Killing" About a race track robbery made in 1956. The tracks hadn't change that much from I first started going 10 years later.

LOVE Let It Ride - Former NY DollDavid Johansen is a hoot. great cast.

Champions - 1984 - John Hurt stars as British jockey Bob Champion, whose career - and then his life - is threatened by cancer. Meanwhile his Grand National mount Aldanti battles a ruptured tendon. Would seem far fetched if it weren't true. Based on Champion's UK bestseller.

Phar Lap - Excellent 1983 classic from Oz about the great one.

Seabiscuit - 2003 - Yes, it's corny, but it boasts a wonderful cast and the cinematography is gorgeous. Love the last shot, looking down the stretch thourh Seabiscuits ears. No patch on the book but I don't care, super racing footage.

First Saturday In May 2007 - This recent doc is a good inside view of the travails of the 2006 Derby trail. For once, the people are just as (or even more interesting) than the horses.

I HATE The Black Stallion.

The Killing (1956) is an early Stanley Kubrick film set at the track, very good entry from the hard boiled crime school. Not much racing in it though,

Let it ride hands down "I don't understand why you people can't watch the horses run around the track without betting on them" "There's no racing without betting" but when Mathou put the chicken up on his horse instead of a jock in cassies shadow that cracked me up

All of my favorites have already been mentioned but I'll throw the Marx Bros movie, "A Day at the Races" into the mix.

Yeah...I remember that one...but he was really good as the Lemon Drop Kid...
not on subject, but, I could watch all his 'road' movies with Crosby a hundred times...they were a great team. Bob Hope...a true American icon

I'd forgotten 'Champions'...fabulous story, great movie...Hurt was outstanding.

Have you ever seen 'Casey's Shadow'...if not...you should...casting was outstanding, stroy wonderful...based on a true story...and they actually got all the 'technical lingo' right...including calling a foal a foal and not a colt

I agree...2003 Seabisuit had incredible cinematography...I already mentioned it had too many corny things...but I give it 5 stars...besides, I adore Jeff Bridges.
The Black Stallion was good, I thought...silly, far fetched story...but good non the less...the part I liked best was when Mickey Rooney was teaching the kid to ride... very authentic..."sittin' chilly"

1. Let It Ride
2. Seabiscuit
3. The Killing
I put on the Let It Ride dvd every so often and I still laugh. Everyone who frequents a track can probably relate to the characters and the humor. A classic.

Making a living by doing Castelo's lowest jobs (such as looking after his goldfish or trying out bullet-proof jackets) the two men dream of opening the world's first Jewish-Italian delicatessen.
They accompany Frank "The Fixer" Acavano, one of Castelo's top men and a violent psychopath, to Meadowlands Racetrack to place a bet on Castelo's behalf. Valentini changes horses at the last minute because his boss usually bets on the wrong one."
Gee, I forgot about this one. This was a funny movie. Frankie"the Fixer" Acavano was played by Lou Albano the wrestling guy and he was hilarious. That scene in the church cracks me up. Many funny scenes throughout. A good one.

Horseracing Needs A Good Movie

There are good movies about gambleing: The Hustler, Cincinnati Kid, The Color of Money, Atlantic City, The Cooler, etc. Horseracing needs a movie like the aforementioned. We don't need a silly slapstick, cutesy pie movie. We need a movie about real life horseplayers. It needs to be a little on the dark side. Life at the track is not always glamerous. We live in our own little world and it's brutal. People need to know about us. We are a unique group. The movie could focus on handicap contests in Vegas. It could tell what life is like at smaller tracks and off track betting facilities. It should have big stars. Horseplayers are differant from other gamblers. We take it very seriously. The movie should tell the good and the bad. I would like a horseracing movie along the lines of The Hustler or The Color of Money, instead of pool, life at the track. The Coast Guard got a bump from The Guardian. An honest and true story of who we are, and how we live would help our profession.

On the funny side: Let it Ride.

On the downside: The Grifters.

I'm glad you said "good"

Tough to leave a great/the best gambling movie off your list

The Gambler (1974)

I know it's a bit dated, but I always loved, "National Velvet", starring a very young Elizabeth Taylor, as a girl jockey riding her homebred horse, "The Pie" to victory in the "Grand National Steeplchase"...only to be DQ'd because she was a girl.....Mickey Rooney, am ex-joxkey and a travelling drifter who stumbled onto the farm, got the horse ready for the biggest race of the year....a tearjerker of sorts but I was rootin' for "the PIe" all the way...

best,
