The move could have been made last night to run a shortened late-day card---this weather has been forecast for days now and the forecast was right on the money.

Vets said it was safe to race.
Riders agreed to race.
Owners/trainers agreed to race.
Track put in special precaution so they could race.

Apparently STate knows better.
Phone calls from PETA, Gelded State Officials know better.

Kudos to Mth for having this contingency plan at the ready.

I bet they are handing out FREE BEER until 6Pm.
Right?

I wish the entire card was being cancelled. This heat is unreal. UNBEARABLE for any living thing to be running. No horses, and I mean NOT A SINGLE ONE should be expected to run a 1 1/16 to 1 1/8 in this. Not even in a sprint either.

This is cruel. Monmouth should've taken care and handled this days ago. .... I'd like to have heard management trying to explain, "oh sure, we got it all covered. We've got extra vets, etc here today."

Dude, the vets ain't doin' the damn running!!!!!!

Quote:
Todd Pletcher relayed to TVG that state officials spoke to track management about temperatures. A track official separately notified Horse Racing Nation that a high-ranking New Jersey politician stepped in needing assurance conditions were OK to run the card.

I suspect Lasix was already administered to horses right through race 10 or 11. Not sure if pushing back the races by four hours or more will have much an impact on efficacy, but it might.

By the time the rest of the races go off they'll just be running for the horses connections and their friends. Probably most people will advance bet and get outta there long before 6 p.m..

Y'all forgive me but I'm not handling this well at all. They could've made the right decision just as NYRA did. And other tracks. Don't put the horses, who of course, have no say at risk like this. .... I ain't PETA, would not give them the time of day. And I love this sport as much as each of you but this is wrong.

Here at my house, it's 98, how on earth can anyone...management, trainers/owners, I don't care who you are expect this from these animals. Damn, I'm mad!

96 degrees in Arlington Heights right now, with a real feel of 106 degrees. AP is running - surprised me.

If there are any horses at risk, it is all on the heads of the owners and trainers.
