I am certain they anticipated that they would lose sales in some market segments with such a controversial campaign.
They are a multi-billion dollar marketing company. They know their demographics. They have probably done a lot of marketing research, marketing studies, surveys, and studied their target markets and demographics.

What took you so long? I boycotted Nike in the late 80's when that POS Michael Jordan started bad mouthing the Pistons whining his way to a title.
