What’s wrong with this picture?
One of these players has a cap hit of $8 million per season, and the other has a cap hit of $8.7 million per season.
One of these players scored 44 goals this season, while the other scored 23.
One of these players is ranked 1st in goals this season, while the other is ranked 60th.
If you look at the graph that has Primary Points/Hour and Shot Impact/Hour, one of these players is regressing badly, while the other is relatively static.
You’re stuck with this clown for the next 5 years.

Easy Hoofed, losing Phil was the best thing to happen to us. We wanted him to lead. That's not his game. With the Pens he's a very comfortable follower. Talented as hell. Not a leader. Addition by subtraction. One of the few trades that actually helped both teams. Kappy is on the way.
Why wouldn't Vegas rock the NHL world and make a max offer to Leon Draisatil? They seem to be in perfect position to do so. It would really put the Oilers in a bind. Sorry Fox.

If Vegas makes that move, the Oilers would be smart to let him go to that team. I think, that Vegas would have to give up 4 1st Round choices, if the contract is over $9.1M a year. How many lottery picks would that end up costing this team?

Compensation picks are not lottery protected.
If a team does not have a pick in the next upcoming draft available for compensation, they may not make a contract offer in the certain range where that pick is needed for compensation. Teams may not use draft picks acquired in trades with other teams, but extra acquired draft picks can influence a team's decision to submit an offer sheet.

That's a thought.
I don't know how other GMs and owners would react to that down the track.
It would hurt the Oilers for sure.
But while Draisaitl is very good, he's not great like McDavid, and sooner or later would be replaced.
In the meanwhile, Peter Chiarelli has said any offer sheets will be matched, if necessary.

Very, very few are great like McDavid. But you could argue Draisatil is a franchise player. Not sure how other GM's would react. But Vegas has done deals with lots of those teams already. The ice is broken. Could harden, but it is broken.

He doesn't have any high priced players. He could take Draisaitl now and Matthews in two years.

Hey Now!
The Toronto Maple Leafs have added another veteran free agent to their roster, acquiring forward Patrick Marleau in a three-year deal worth $18.75 million.

Patrick Marleau's contract with the Leafs includes a full no-movement clause.
Patrick Marleau
Year 1 - $8.5M
Year 2 - $6M
Year 3 - $4.25M
I take it that JVR will have to be moved out to accommodate this contract. Babcock got his favorite player on the team, let’s just hope he still has something to offer at age 38.

Don't like that third year. Term. Term. Term. Agree on JVR. Who's the d-man?
