Out of curiosity (I know...thread drift), if there was currently a sitting member of Congress, a Republican Senator in fact, who was found out to be a member of the KKK as a youth, but now, like Byrd did, claims to be enlightened and "reborn," what are the chances this Senator would still be in Congress 24 hours from now?
I'd put the conservative estimate at ZERO chance.

Besides, are you suggesting that either party has the power to force a sitting member to resign?

I didn't realize the Klan didn't exist anymore...you're saying the possibility of a 60yo Senator having been a Klan member 40 years ago is that remote? I beg to differ.

EXTREMELY. By the late 60's early 70's the Klan was not something with which to be associated, unless your name was Bubba and/or dumb as a rock.
I believe a 2/3rds majority is required for expulsion...So the actions of one party wouldn't cut it. Also, impeachment isn't an option for members of congress.

I don't think the Pace Master was referring to expulsion, it was resignation. Of course a party could produce enough pressure to achieve that quickly. It's happened.
