Angel Hernandez must have set a record when he had an astounding three calls overturned in last night's Yankees/Red Sox game. As a former umpire, I was long opposed to having replay in baseball. Eventually, I came around and now believe that having replay is a good thing. The argument was always that umpires get a high percentage of calls correct (99%). While this is true, most calls in baseball are easy to make and with four man crews, even many of the "difficult" calls are easy (ex: hard shots right down the line). I have often wondered what the accuracy rate is on close calls, or more importantly, on close calls that get reviewed. My anecdotal evidence is that about half the calls get overturned. Anything over 20-25% would be hard to imagine.
Angel Hernandez is in a class by himself as far as being a bad umpire, and not just because of this one game. His response to not getting selected as a crew chief or World Series umpire was to sue MLB for discrimination. As this article explains, his performance in last night's game (and always really) does not go far in supporting his claim.
