President Donald Trump proposed the complete elimination of all barriers to international trade at a Group of Seven summit, a move that turns the tables on allies who accuse the U.S. of wielding protectionist policies.

“No tariffs, no barriers, that’s the way it should be, and no subsidies,” Trump said during a 30-minute press conference on the sidelines of the meeting in La Malbaie, Quebec. "I did suggest it and people were -- I guess they’re going to go back to the drawing board and check it out."

White House Economic Adviser Larry Kudlow, who was invited by Trump to speak from the same podium, described the comments as Trump’s "free trade proclamation.”

We only have friends and allies insofar as it meets their goals to be our friends and allies. Why can't we do as they do? Anyone who thinks Germany or France or Canada or anyone else wouldn't slit our throats to gain an advantage needs to re-read history.

Elysian and Clocker are free traders, yet are unwilling to admit that no nation we trade with has free trade with us, NOR are those nations willing to go to zero on all the tariffs they have against us if we do the same.

It goes back to Clocker's incessant and erroneous point that a negative trade balance is somehow good for the US. If a negative balance is so good, why won't anyone else trade positions with us? You may have 1,000 opinions supporting your theoretical position, but reality and application doesn't seem to want to follow theory.

Neither you nor Trump understand tariffs and their impact. Imagine a starting point zero where neither we nor Canada have tariffs on the other.

Step 1: Canada imposes high tariffs on US dairy products. Who gets hurt? Canadian consumers get hurt because they now pay higher prices for dairy products, both because of tariffs on imports, and because the tariffs allow Canadian companies to charge more and still compete with US imports. US dairy producers may or may not get hurt, depending on alternative markets and, another issue altogether, US farm price supports.

Step 2: The president imposes retaliatory tariffs on Canadian lumber. Who gets hurt? US consumers get hurt paying higher prices for lumber, both because of tariffs on imports and because those tariffs allow US producers to price at a higher level and still be competitive.

Canadian lumber companies do not get hurt, because they are still getting the same price for their lumber, and because they are not losing US market share. The US can only produce about 2/3 of the lumber we use, and the rest has to come from Canada.

Quiz: Are US consumers better off under Step 1, or under Steps 1 and 2?

You have produced no theory or historical evidence to prove "erroneous". A big contributor to the Great Depression was tariffs and trade surplus.

A trade deficit may be a good thing or a bad thing. It is not a bad thing for the US right now because we have one of the most prosperous economies and strongest currencies in the world. In point of fact, we have a trade surplus with more than half of our trading partners.

If the trade deficit is killing us, how did we add over 200 thousand new jobs last month, with unemployment below 4%?

This must be getting tiresome constantly posting something to get beaten down again... recent examples: Dairy and Trump doesn't want Free Trade...

This is complete hyperbole. No effort has been made in that direction and the overwhelming evidence is they are greater supporters of no barriers than us at the moment. I've listed recent trade accomplishments... none involve the US.

It is if we have surplus of dollars.

Again hyperbole... again... dollars.

Show something... anything... backing any of the claims you purport... we've been waiting for awhile.

Here is reality again... you all completely ignore it:

Quote:
- $18 Trillion GDP
- Cheap Goods
- Full Employment
- Highest Manufacturing Production in History
- Highest Levels of Consumption (Globally)
- High standard of living
- Relatively Low Cost of Living (Lower than Germany, France, UK, Sweden, Finland, Japan, Australia, South Korea, you know all those countries this targets)
The constant position changes and complaints regarding trade on the issue shows they have zero idea what they are talking about.

So tell me what is the ACTUAL goal of all of this? I've heard about 8 different thing from the Administration... its incoherent... so I want your take. Oh and please address how absolutely terrible the above quoted is.

Trump will 'win' this battle because he is the only one that knows what the score is.

Baby boy Trudeau is a clown, who has led his country into economic recession and is also working on destroying the sovereignty of the Canadian people.

Canada is not an environmentally friendly country when it comes to their forest industry so they can go to hell and put up all the tariffs on US paper goods they wish. The USA does NOT need Canada for anything, Never forget that.

We should now also build a Northern border wall so all the freeloaders in Canada cannot come to the USA and take advantage of our generosity and the quality health care system here that they exploit.

Anyway, besides Gordon Lightfoot, Ruth Low, Bobby Orr and a few other hockey stars, what has Canada EVER contributed anything of substance to the USA, the world? No.

Now, on to the despicable and dangerous trio of Merkel, May and Macron, the three blind mice of the international stage.

The free ride is now over for them and the Euro Trash they lead. They tell people they are our allies -- huh? How is that? Play with numbers all you want, but never forget they live a vulgar lifestyle thanks to the USA. We let their products in here for a fraction of what they tariff our goods. Screw them from now on. With all the benefits of bad trade deals there is still nominal growth in the EU. They'll come crawling to Trump/USA soon enough. Go to the bank on this.

'Free' health care? 'Free' protection from EU enemies? All paid for by the generous US taxpayer, who spends billions to keep peace. Does anyone forget that we bailed out the UK and France, and the rest of Europe when the Kaiser and later the Nazis wanted to take over the entire continent? Yes, the Trump haters and the America Last crowd forgets that too, but citizens and patriots never forgot that.

I cannot wait for Trump to send our soldiers home that have been in Europe, mostly Germany, for decades protecting the degenerates and vulgarians of Europe.

Let Merkel pay for her own protection. Same with France where the flowers will still grow because of the blood American GIs sacrificed there for these ungreatful slobs.

To hell with Canada, the EU, the Fortune 1000 multi-national corporations and the international banking cabal that looks to take away individual freedom with every chance.

And to the Trump haters on here and around the world -- keep moaning and groaning because I can't wait for tomorrow because Trump gets better every day.

If the President pulls grand slam in Singapore (huge long shot), everyone will line up to kiss the ring. And right now is a big fear for the left.
