War Pass Gets Easy Race

Seems that Nick Zito wants to give War Pass a tune-up race without too much stress. War Pass will compete in a 1 mile allowance race on Sunday (Fountain of Youth Stakes day) at Gulfstream against a weak field. Sounds like a formula for a minus pool. There will be six entries. Bridge-jumpers will have a field-day with this one.

Here's a link to the story.

This will be an unfortunate trend Norm since GP lacks 8.5f prep for their Derby. Seems so insignificant… ½ a furlong, but many good trainers say you can gut a young animal by pushing that button this early.

I also read that Zito was looking at the Tampa Bay Derby after this tune up. Again…I think the 9f only distance is working against GP and Tampa is really positioned well.

And remember, it's a one turn mile at GP.

Here is a link to an interesting article in which Andy Beyer has begun comparing War Pass to Seattle Slew.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/02/08/AR2008020803619.html?sub=AR

It would be nice if he were right only because what our sport most desperately needs is a superstar. We almost had one in Barbaro, but that turned into a public relations disaster.

I wish this horse good fortune and good health. Horse racing needs a success story, but there is such a long way to go.

what this sport needs desperately is lower take outs, more tv and news coverage and less competition from casinos/lotterys/etc.

Dan,

I think Street Senses use of the TB Derby will start th etrend in motion. Any Given saturday turned out top be a pretty awesome 3yo as well and he cam eout of that race as well. As for WAR PASS's race. It was a paid workout and
he was never really asked. It'll be interesting to see who shows up at TB to take him on.

Exactly John;

Everyone is wondering if a one-dimensional type can make the champ track a horse. “Honey Honey Honey” isn’t even close to a win threat, but he’s got the earliest gas of the locals it seems.

It’s always interesting to see a top animal when their taken out of their best game. I.e. Seattle Slew in the Derby (as was mentioned in another thread.) when he got off so badly and then blasted off like Jim Taylor on a Packer sweep it was AWESOME. (No…I’m not comparing Pass to Slew btw)

Is War Pass…one of the “ones”? Come to Tampa everyone and see if the champ will go to the Wood with his growing reputation in tact or…not.

Dan,

I might take you up on that. No doubt, War Pass is a 1 in 1000 horse. On that, the distances of the triple crown should present short hurdles to him. The one negative on the Tampa/Wood route is that War Pass may not be seriously challenged until May.

The one problem for the front runner at 2 turns, is that the front runner has no real measure for how much speed is too much, as the distance increases.
Granted, if the ability gap is wide enough, this makes little difference.

It will be interesting to see if any real competition also chooses the Tampa/Wood route. This would be a race that would show whether Pyro's last stretch run was indicative of mature improvement. Will he be there?

The Gotham seems to have some promising horses targeting it, so one or more of them may emerge as threats in the Wood.

I have been following the triple crown races for several years now. I can say War Pass is far above any horse I have seen.

He tops Hard Spun who I loved a lot and even Street Sense from last year. He has Curlin type workouts. They are very fast. The way he looks when he races is like a champion horse.

I expect War Pass to do more than all of these horses from last year. It is early but I will make that prediction now.

If the gotham is this week, I will post it as the ROTW. Call me silly but I sort of liked it when the Gotham was a 1 turn mile on the outer track. It just doesn't feel right that its on the inner around two turns.

Remeber EASY GOER in this race ?

Let's try to stay calm until he either goes wire to wire at 2 turns or pours out 9f like Cool Coal Man did in the FOY. There are still a couple of others that might pour out 10f a lot better. Post position may be a huge factor for War Pass at CD.
