I think the benefits outweigh the costs of keeping this section alive, regardless of how high the animosity seems to run. This may be kind of a stream of consciousness ramble, 'cause it's a first impression after a quick read-through so far.

The fact that these word battles go on between largely anonymous id's makes it a safe space for that kind of thing that is going on everyday out there among real people (to the consternation of most rational observers). When you go into Off Topic, you go in with loins girded and shields up, figuratively, but you also know when you leave you are unhurt and free to get on with your real lives.

Compare Facebook; there one is exchanging with real people, either "friends" or friends of "friends, and for me there is a constant struggle to not call out a "friend" for continually posting silly lib talking points and all their toady friends liking or commenting "Yeah, well said," etc; but I don't, because I may have to deal with them in real life sometime somewhere. Real people get really threatened on Facebook, sometimes leading to criminal events with bad outcomes. Here, it's nowhere near that.

I don't Twitter, but I do read Twitchy often. Some of the stuff (read: almost all of the stuff in the political arena) that goes on there is completely insane, with real people engaging other real people with incredible acts of incivility. What makes it worse to me is that the blue-checked twitters are real people, with their multiple degrees listed, or their media affiliations, or their positions in real organizations, posting with unforeseen levels of disrespect. There the threats are real and dangerous as well: doxxing innocent people, inciting acts of civil unrest, stalking, etc. I would not, in real life, ever become or remain close friends with someone who enjoyed engaging in that kind of emotional depravity, at least if I was aware of it. Nothing remotely like that happens here, to our credit.

Sure, it gets a little rough and tumble, petty, childish, mean...whatever. But there are also good inputs in OT from folks from pretty diverse backgrounds* that are entertaining and informative, which would be lost if it were shuttered. If someone else were to suggest that it's gotten stale and predictable, I could agree with that, but not to the point where I thought it deserved to be executed. Some new shooters would be good, but I don't know how you'd recruit them. This is our current roster, which is constantly changing. Let it ride for a while longer; no one is getting hurt.

You raise a slew of great points! The benefits far outweigh the negatives here in Off Topic. Unfortunately, things get heated because nobody can defend this prez on a daily basis without feeling like a fool to some extent. So the choice is either backoff defending him a bit or dig in even more. Obviously, most posters here are not used to backing off.

And Sammy The Sage, even if you are 100% right - and what sane person could question you when it comes to PA defending the indefensible Tommy - PA refuses to see it. So we either accept this chink in PA's armor or we stop posting down here.

I haven't posted much here lately for personal reasons - nothing at all to do with PA. But I still stop by OT often for the entertainment/education/editorial value! IT'S STILL HUGE!
