After six weeks of safe racing and training, Santa Anita had its second horse death in four days when a first-time starter pulled up during a race Sunday and was euthanized Monday. It was the 25th equine death at the Arcadia track since Dec. 26.

The surface issues may be in the past, but the public perception issue is not.
Will be interesting to see how many activists show up at Thursday's CHRB meeting.

I'll say it again...so that everyone gets a chance to read it and there are no excuses.
NO POLITICALLY MOTIVATED posts in the horse racing forums.

Not sure why anybody thought this would stop. If bisphospinates was the suspected cause of the breakdowns, which I think can safely be inferred from the immediate reaction in the industry to condemn them, those drugs aren't out of the bone over a few months.
That track needs to close for the season for the good of the industry, it's back in the headlines and inches ever closer to a ballot initiative with every headline it makes. Stop giving the national media easy material to work with

1 horse in 6 weeks is actually a pretty amazing lack if incidents.
I have no idea where they are for the year now but its probably not that far behind statistical norms.

That's not the point here and it's becoming increasingly irritating to see people rationalize it. This is a public perception issue, and SA needs to stop making headlines for what we've all become accustomed to know. A 'normal' breakdown rate is not digestible by the general public that can decide on the existence of horse racing

I think I'd rather see racing canceled until Del Mar opens than watch racing be stopped in California

Yes they actually did have a good stretch but to many casuals/general public, they actually dont know horses die in this sport so for the people who would casually vote on a ballot question, it's a big deal.
Santa Anita needed to stop before it went mainstream and they didnt.
I've said t before that this sport does not have the political will or economic power to beat a ballot question. It's just not that important.

This was in my MS Edge feed:

LOS ANGELES - A third horse has died in nine days at Santa Anita when Kochees could not be saved by surgery on Sunday morning after sustaining an injury Saturday during the sixth race.

When is someone going to note that this is the THIRD for Hollendorfer? And he also broke down Gunmetal Grey though I guess he’s still alive.
