I believe some here would do well to watch this video. Basically it's Michael Pizzolla's post derby rant. He kind of explains his mindset here. In a nutshell he admits he did not cash on the derby and shows his losing tickets, but rather than trying to explain why he lost, he explains why he felt the bets he made were good bets. He also explains that if this had been any other race it would have been a clear pass. Very humble guy.

I use a different approach, but the thing I like about him is that he understands we are all working with incomplete/inaccurate information and an imperfect understanding of all the issues. Once you realize that, it becomes harder to have very strong opinions but it also gets easier to go against conventional wisdom when almost everyone else is the using the same/similar figures or the same handicapping ideas.

I have followed him for many years, and I respect his work as he does not tout horses; he offers his opinions with an explanation.

One of the very best gentlemen handicapper's in horse racing, he is all class, also wrote one of the great book's called "Handicapping Magic", a book that you will reread many times as you perfect your handicapping skills.
