elysiantraveller, why must you try to be Pace Advantage's Walter Cronkite having no reputable understanding other than what the ultra left's talking points are. Did you ever work for the John Kerry campaign?
The deal made by the Obama administration was so bad that Iran is on the brink of having nuclear bomb this year. They are now facing a preemptive strike to take out their nuclear facilities to deny them the ability to carry out the threats they espouse. Everything they control will fail them just prior to facing the doom that awaits them. On or about that time you will be at your best here when you abstain from your no so expertness you seem to share today.

Ely, why do you speak to your elders with such rudeness and disrespect on a continuous basis? Most posters you speak to are old enough to be your father, yet you persist in your rhetoric of this "I know better than you do" nonsense.
We don't mind engaging you in debate, but at some point you've got to realize you're outgunned, outflanked and outmanned.
You're a smart guy with potential to be a true force, just reign it in a bit.

I said on this board over a year ago we were making a mistake heading down this path and it would lead to a mess.
Now we are in that mess and again I'm the only one here saying what I would do to get out of it.
Meanwhile as Trump waffles back and forth his supporters here wait to see what he will do. They don't have opinions themselves they wait to see what their leader will do and back it unconditionally.
According to the NYT today "nothing" is his answer. Doing nothing doesn't solve the mess we've made for ourselves. That won't make it go away. Trump either needs to back down and ease pressure on Iran or actually scare them off.
We are still playing defense.

The mess was created over 40 years ago and President after President didn't deal with it.
The phony deal that Kerry-Obama came up with made the mess even worse.
Iran is being hurt by sanctions and there has always been hope that the people would rise up against the Ayatollahs. That won't happen as their military is too powerful for ordinary citizens.
The "mess" is a World problem, not just America's, keeping in mind that Iran is the leading exporter of terrorism anywhere on this planet.

The situation we are in is from unilaterally reneging on a multinational agreement the rest of the world agreed to. Then waging economic warfare.
That action is the direct reason why we are here. If you wanted to go down that path then you should be happy we are here.
Iran can't respond economically so they will respond militarily and assymetrically.
The rest of the "world" you describe doesn't agree with us here and depends mightily on the oil that flows through those waterways.

How myopic.
You might get a better view of the parade if you go up a rung or two on the ladder.

Diplomacy will rue the day not war. And all will benefit but just one death could change everything.

We withdrew from the JCPOA so we could sanction Iran again despite them following the agreement.
According to jimmyb this is trashing their economy and the reason they are lashing out. (He is correct)
According to you this is a myopic view of the events.

Literally the new talking point...
Trump supporters just sit around waiting for him to do something, in this case he literally did nothing, so they can say how great it was.
All Hail Trump the Benevolent! Chickenhawk of the Undecideds! Slayer of Definitive Action and Policy!
Meanwhile in the non-Trumpist real world....

jimmyb, you, and me all agree that Iran is hurting from and lashing out due to sanctions.
The myopic view of events is yours alone.
The picture is much wider and higher and deeper than what you are seeing.
Iran is building:
1. nuclear weapons
2. a Caliphate with spider web tentacles digging into Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Gaza - and proxy armies in those regions.
The deal Kerry-Obama struck merely put up a smokescreen that was coming down within a decade. It was a farce. They were just kicking the can down the road. The mess remained brewing a stew of hatred.
Iran has visions of spreading Theocracy via radical Muslims to all parts of the world to achieve goals laid out by Mohammed in the Koran.
Anyone who does not totally believe the fundamental tenets of radical Islam is an enemy, an Infidel - and that includes many millions of moderate Muslims.
