There is a clear "L" sound at the beginning and the end of the world. Laurel.
I even used the headphones I use when characters on the TV sound like they're mumbling.

I'm convinced different media outlets are playing different files, so it confuses the public and the real answer keeps changing.
I think some people are convinced it's one way or the other just because others are suggesting it. Take away the ability to see other opinions, and the results will be one sided.

I played it on my computer and it was Laurel. I just heard it on Fox news and it said Yanny.

The article I read said that if you have a difficult time with high sounds you will hear, "Laurel." Otherwise, you will hear "Yanny."
Actually a pretty ingenious idea.

Like I said I played it once in front of the girl and we both heard completely different sounds. Played the same clip in the office today and heard something different... I had other stuff playing in the background so it may have had an effect.
Probably no different than how our brains process colors...
The flat parts of A and B are the same color. Just place a divider along the horizontal.

I hear a clear "Y" sound at the beginning. It sounds like "Ylaurel" to me

Today, I clearly hear YANNY! ?No mistaking it.
Yesterday, it was clearly LAUREL!
Is someone messing with us?
Is this some new kind of blood-alcohol test? Find out in a few hours.....

Were you listening to it on the same device both times?
Comments on the web indicate that the speakers used have an effect. Speakers with better bass capacity tend to sound like laurel, smaller speakers with limited bass (like a smart phone) sound like yanny. Some have reported that with adjustable speakers, turning the treble up high and the bass down low they hear yanny, while turning the treble down and the bass up they hear laurel.

When Tom first started this thread, I watched the video on my phone, and, although the audio was slightly garbled...it was unmistakably "Yanni". But I just listened to it again on the same phone with earplugs, in a quiet room...and I now hear "Laurel", clear as a bell.
