With all due respect...

With volatility in the markets the way it is, perhaps you shoud consider larger stops? I trade mini ES futures ($50 a point also), and my stop loss orders are typically no less than $500 (10 points).

There are times when I have larger stops...for just the reasons you state...if you check my history

39 -5.60 +82.30 $4,115
40 +29.90 +112.20 $5,610
I think one of the reasons I am doing well is I am able to keep stops on the lower side when I deem necessary...thus I don't lose much when I lose, looking at my history above.

And actually, I have been known to make my stops wider then my method calls for, as I did in my last couple of trades...which ultimately only ended up costing me more $$$

This thread continues to be a work in progress, as it was intended from the start, although not much has changed since the beginning...

11/18 - 12/17 -2,115 per contract

12/18 - 1/17 +3,550 per contract

Anyone want to share how they determine a “solid” stop for intraday trading?

I’ll start: (bullish/bearish 15-minute or lower)

A high volume bar must be higher than previous bar.

Next volume bar must be lower than previous bar.

Price on second bar must not be lower than heavy volume bar. This is the buy in.

This low often holds until: heavier volume bar or end of day.

This is for intraday only and used in conjunction with other stuff.

I think the only way to determine what a solid stop is for a particular strategy is to backtest it over thousands of trades.

Maybe it's the last swing high or swing low? Or maybe it's as simple as slightly above or below the high/low of the signal bar? Or maybe it's a high/low reading on an indicator? It all depends on what your strategy is...different stop methodologies might work better or worse.

There's no way of knowing unless you put it through a vigorous and honest test. At least that's how I go about it.

One stop does not fit all methods.

But probably start testing the simplest stops...as simpler is always better, usually...especially if you are backtesting and trying to automate a strategy.

BTW, despite the above post I just made, I will tell you that the strategy I am using in this thread was never backtested at all...nothing about it was tested beforehand.

This is something I visualized on a chart one day...went back over some old data by hand and saw some promising stuff, and decided to just start posting here to see what happens.

So this thread is essentially my backtest...or live test, really.

It will probably fail eventually, because it is based on nothing but my eye and gut. But who knows...maybe for once I have seen something real and it lasts a while...
