I am glad they made this change, this way PETA will not be protesting the sport.

All these non-permissible rules about whipping seem to appease those who think the horse is being hurt and perhaps injured in some way. It’s all nonsense! They’ve been doing it for 100’s of years and there are many reasons why. One of which involves implementing some rider’s control during the run.

I’m much more concerned with the well-being and safety of the jockeys who race ride these 1000lb animals. We’ll see how long it takes until someone pays the price with a severe injury because another jockey couldn’t control his horse properly. How will PETA react then when it comes to the well being of a human ?

Back in 2011 the Jockeys in Hong Kong revolted and refused to ride until the HK Jockey Club mitigated the whipping regulations.

Prat hit the winner of the second 5 times in order to get up and win.

going by your comment (haven't seen the race, or whether a fine has already been announced)

somehow I doubt we'll even see a press release explaining a stewards' decision.

That underhanded whipping looks ugly. There’s no way they’re getting the best out of their horses.

The industry has so many major problems, you'd think that use of the whip was not a top priority. I guess it was a low hanging fruit.

Changing the rule may appease a few people, but it's not going to appease the extremists that want to see horse racing go the way of dog racing.

As soon as the jockeys get used to it, it's going to be a non issue for gamblers. Some horses don't like the whip anyway and if it does impact how some horses finish, they are all equally impacted. It's not like some horses can be whipped under the old rules and some under the new rules within the same race.

The main issue is jockey and horse safety.

This will have no impact on my gambling at all.

Nothing to see here as Prat was within the rules.

Seems like some Jockeys, like Prat are able to do it well. Others not so much

https://www.drf.com/news/santa-anita...new-whip-rules

Excerpts:

Cedillo described the new rules as “ridiculous.”

“I would have won and I couldn’t switch,” he said. “I don’t know how to hit with the left hand with the whip down. I have to work on it. I know it will cost a lot of winners.”

“We can’t ride them to their full potential, even if it’s a light overhanded tap left-handed,” he said. “That can make a difference. That’s a 2-year-old going long second time out. He needs the encouragement. It’s like taking a hammer away from a carpenter.”

“In my professional opinion, it’s not going to work,” Smith said.

“If you’re on a deep track and they’re tiring, it doesn’t work. It’ll cost somebody second money, a win, or third money.

“If you get one that wants to do it, it’s no problem. If they need to be encouraged, they’ll do something different every stride sometimes. It’s frustrating.”
