Maybe he can do something to turn around the business side, but Gulfstream is as unfriendly to horseplayers as it comes so I'm not optimistic he'll help us at Santa Anita.

Only in a sport where the health of the overall product is tied intrinsically together can people in not so subtle ways get schadenfreude over the others struggles.

I did think it interesting to point out according to Hana's most recent track ratings that Belmont averages less starters per race than Santa Anita. I did not know that and just shows it aint so good times anywhere right now.

When someone (CJ I think) posted the numbers and my beloved TuP was in the top third, I almost passed out upon realizing that nearly every reputable track was doing even worse. I can only imagine if TuP didn't feel like field size mattered either in the day of subsidies how low they'd be.

That's why NYRA is carding more turf races, the average field size is bigger. Unless it rains, then all of the races are four horse fields.

NYRA used to have a lot of 5 horse stakes fields in the 1980's.

Having said that, you should understand that my exchange with cj was something of a joke. I understand better than anyone that NYRA's day to day product is 40 times better than Southern California's right now.

Good times @Oaklawn, KY Downs. I see Ellis purses improving in the near future.

You think it's bad at Santa Anita and other tracks? Check out the racing at Hialeah.

I remember sitting at Churchill Downs years back with BillW from this board, and he predicted tracks running one or two races a day just to keep the casino open.

Not far off........

It really is, but the winners circle photos are kind of funny. The "jockeys" are wearing jeans in the races.
