Wow Andy. First of all, that's a complete nitpick. There's literally no reason to say that other than personal animus against me. Who the hell cares if anyone on this board doesn't get the exact year that the Grateful Dead allowed taping correct?
At any rate, I am not even sure you are correct- which, of course, is an absoute necessity if you want to be such a nitpicker: This site says the band "officially sanctioned" taping in 1984 but it went on long, long before then.
https://www.wired.com/2015/07/gratef...tech-pioneers/
[EDIT: I might add that what we were discussing was a high quality tape of a Grateful Dead show from 1980, including technical information on the professional recording equipment used. Which kind of suggests- it was taped from a taping pit.]
Now, if you want to prove that there were no "taping pits" in 1980, neither officially sanctioned or unofficial, if that's really the sort of thing you want to spend your time doing, then I invite you to do so. If not, you have no business making a comment like this.

Yes, that was fun.
As for sound equipment, I have no idea how that stuff is chosen or why, or how "techie" the people ordering stuff at oaklawn are or what their level of sound engineering background is.
The "buyers" are sometimes not the people who actually have to use the things that are requisitioned. Case in point: I can tell you that they had perfectly operational powdered creamer and sugar dispensers in the casino side that worked great and held enough product that the employees in charge of refilling those comfort stations were able to keep up. And when a customer pressed the button, the stuff actually dispensed and came out into your cup.
Then, it appears they recently changed vendors. Maybe a cheaper bid came in? I dunno.
But it's so bad that every station since has had to put out separate bottles of both creamer and sugar, setting them on top of those new dispensing machines, because the new machines are sub-standard in every way, from every viewpoint of both customers and employees having to deal with them.
So needless to say, they should sit the people down who actually have to USE the equipment that is ordered, and let them do the testing and be part of the planning. But this doesn't happen in many companies, as we all know. You are given equipment and expected to somehow make it work.
One of my relatives helped design space station freedom and actually would sit with the astronauts while designing and getting their feedback, since they would be using the doors that he was designing for the space station. this just makes logical sense, right?????

I copied this thread and sent it to our sound man Corey. He's the kind of guy that appreciates thoughtful input. We'll get it right and sounding as good as possible. Remember we are dealing with MY voice which isn't exactly my strongest suit. Hard to put lipstick on a pig. What I'd give for pipes like "cream donut" Keith Jones from Parx or Don "golden throat" Alexander formally of Hollywood Park and Retama. Or the all time best race track announcer voice. The gravely greatness of the one and only Harry Henson. Give me those tones and I could be a contender.

A simple (used/cheap) in-line noise reduction unit would do wonders.
And maybe I missed it...what's your wind/pop screen set-up, if any?
edited to add...I'm dyslexic...didn't see the 520 is a headset mic?
Doesn't change my reco on NR but your screening options are more limited.
Mic placement in relation to your mouth is now the additional adjustment to try.

For whatever reason, this kind of sound distortion seems to be much more common in sports announcing than other venues that use mikes. As others here have said, this is a windscreen problem. For non-sound engineers, a mike will produce a popping sound with plosives and distort fricatives when there's too much air hitting the sensitive diaphragm. Doesn't mean there is anything wrong with the mike. For the AKG C520L headset mike, the W44 is the correct windscreen -- assume this can be ordered from AKG, if none are available. But a possibly easier and cheaper solution -- make sure the mike is always at least three inches away from the speaker's mouth.

Nice call in the last today. Shashashakemeup, I can't read the name, let alone pronounce it.

Thanks. It was closing a $3.00 pick 3 for me. So I was watching him very intently. I didn't have the leader Marvin. Even though I am a fan of the movie Midnight Run!

Vic- I watched 3-4 races on the Fox broadcast Sat. The audio has improved to where the breathing/inhaling sound is much less noticeable. I can still hear it a little bit, but I don't think it is a distraction like before.
And to add another dimension to the discussion, the audio of your call is unlike any other. I watch a lot of live sports (football, basketball, golf, hockey, etc) and your audio is a one-of-its-kind. It is akin to the audio you hear from an airline pilot. In a way, I kind of like it because it is unique and the call is only a couple minutes.

Vic,
With Arlington, my home track Canterbury, and Prairie Meadows probably opening late, do you think Oaklawn could or should remain open past May 5?
Not just for my and our sakes but for the owners, trainers, and horses who have a place to keep racing, since the above tracks are where many of the Oaklawn horses go.

The current plan is to remain on our regular schedule thru closing day May 2nd.

well I disagree. Your voice is about 1 of 3 that I do not have to turn off the sound for.
Sensory perception is very individual though, just like smell. My ears like your voice though.

Vic,
Thanks for the reply.
At least Oaklawn management and your HBPA have a month to decide.
