Attended the Atlantic City Race Course boutique (4-6 day) meets several times during their final three years. Their extremely unique grandstand elevation, the "hike" from the grandstand first floor "up to" the blacktop, and the overall scene gave me a sense of just how wonderful ACRC must have been in its early days. It was an amazing experience joining the 8,000+ people (per day) that turned out for their six- or seven-race turf cards as the track managed (Maureen Bugdon and team) to keep its nose above water. Long live the $50,000 "Big Tony" Gallo Stakes.

Wonderful video. Thanks for posting.
The great champion Kelso broke his maiden at the track in 1959 when he was a 2-year-old.

Atlantic City closed in 2015, a lot of damage done in 8 years.

If it was in Atlantic City itself and not Mays Landing, I'm sure they would have.
Right now no one seems to be sure what to do with the land.

Cool Video
Got me thinking about the announcers who called there over the years.
I think I remember Larry Lederman was one of the last.
Anyone know who some of the voices were?

Electricity Still Running at Abandoned track
I got to know Morris Tobe, the announcer at New Jersey tracks, a bit, and I believe he announced at Atlantic City. He was famous for having gotten on the mike at Atlantic City when Eddie Arcaro arrived at the track in a helicopter one day. He announced "It's a bird, it's a plane, it's Eddie Arcaro!" Tobe died at the mike at either Laurel or Bowie when, as a fan one day, he was called upon to announce the reaming races when the regular announcer became ill halfway through the program. He called the next race perfectly, and then the mike went dead. Tobe had passed away. He knew sports announcer Chris Schenkel and I read somewhere that Schenkel actually was the race caller at Narragansett Park. I believe Tobe was a New Englander. Interesting stuff.

Schenkel called every sport under the sun, not surprising he was also a race caller. Hard to believe his last broadcast was over 25 years ago.
