Database Guys (especially Formulator)
I just ran my weekly database updates and noticed that some of the data has the new GP track surface field with a value of "Y".
As far as I can tell, that's a brand new value for the surface field. So if you have any coding out there looking for "D", "T", "X", "E", "O", "A" or "B", or any other legitimate values but not "Y" you could have some issues.
It was an easy fix for me, but I was lucky to find it right away before I did weeks of updates.

Thanks for the heads-up. I use trackmaster charts but I will check to make sure there's nothing new.

No problem, I owe you plenty for all the help you've given me over the years.
I use Formulator, but the source for all this data is Equibase. So it's likely it was a change for other sources too.
I was just lucky to see that half the GP races were missing from one of my tables. When I debugged it, I found the new surface code. The system couldn't do a match on another table by surface and dropped the records. I already fixed it, but it would have been a bigger problem if I didn't notice it for a few weeks.

I was a bit concerned when I saw the original post so I double checked and the code for the Tapeta course_type in Equibase data is "E" as it is for all other all-weather surfaces in North America.
It might be something only in Formulator.

It's interesting because on the results file I use the Surface is coded as "D" which is typical for Dirt and the Course is coded as "E" which is typical of Synthetic.
I import both the Formulator PPs and results charts separately.
Most people are probably OK, though I'm not sure why the Formulator PPs for Race Information would be coded differently when the source for everything is Equibase.

Yes sir(s), thank you, it checks out as E. I was going to yell for Ellis earlier but just in case he was tied up I checked it out during a coffee break.

Brought to you by the same people who time races so competently.

Class,
Thanks for the heads up. Hadn't watched the races the past few days to see it. They come through the same in my chart files so it will take some work to unscramble.
Do you think they will continue to use the about in the distances?

I noticed that also. I think CJ mentioned that on Twitter with regards to figure making. Then I saw it in the data. Maybe it will only last until they iron all the kinks on the new track.

From what I understand that will go away, the course survey isn't completed yet.

It would be helpful if they could give us a different surface name like turf and iturf.

In fact looking at the entries for today they are marked "idirt".
I guess I should look at it as an opportunity to get some figures up and running for the new track and perhaps beat the crowd.
Happy betting.

Is there any industry out there as pathetically incompetent as horse racing?
This isn't rocket science.

Does government count as an industry?
