Their is reciprocity between states on any suspensions.

Usually this also crosses into international jurisdictions. If there is a suspension for a rider overseas it is usually upheld in the US. On rare occasions it might be different, but it is rare.

I highly doubt he will be able to ride anywhere in the US, particularly with this offense.

This is almost as bad as Pete Rose getting banned from baseball..

The only thing Rose was old and made his money already

This kid has his whole life in front of him.....

Racing is probably the only education he has......

I'm sure some compassionate person(s) won't be as cruel

More like an unheralded rookie pitcher getting caught red-handed shaving points.

Fu*k him!

You want him to try to drag everyone down? At least you come across as innocent and naive.

A good lawyer could argue that it's just a photo, no real evidence. We've seen optical illusions even with photo finish camera where the incorrect horse was declared the winner.

Reasonable doubt...
From my understanding, the photo that has been shared is just ONE photo of a number of photos that were presented. More were apparently taken in the approach to and in the winners' circle, from what I've read.

It's also to be noted that they could not make an allegation that he used it on the horse, because they could not establish video/photo evidence for that.

His agent, seemingly as surprised as many others, reported asking him about whether he used it on the horse, and rather than a denial, got no answer at all.

Watching the replay of the race, it appeared the horse may have won "on his own" - I didn't see any obvious jab of the buzzer with the accompanying swish of the tail. But he still may have used it, of course. But if he didn't, that's a heck of price to pay for just toting the hardware.

If the suspension of his license is held up, I assume that means Mejia can't apply for any other racetrack job, being barred from the grounds? Maybe he can be an exercise rider on a farm. A definite cut in pay on deck.

According to the Equibase database, he's 42 for 350 this year, with just over $1M in purse money. So that's about $60K from wins, plus whatever the going rate is for rides times 350.

Like I mentioned before......

The fine is way too much on someone's life....

Looks like they are making an example for others.....

Maybe a 4 month ban and $150,000 fine is more sensible....

Let's see what the future holds for this ..

You blatantly cheat in a gambling game you should pay the price. His skill isn't in that high of a demand, sport will do just fine without him.

Av$150,000 fine is worse than a ten year ban since there's no way he has access to that much money, and without horseracing he likely cannot get a job where he can save that much in less than ten years.

I have a question. What has the typical ban been for using a device like this?

These jockeys know what severe penalties await them if they get caught, and he got caught. Now he has to do ten years, because if the animal sympathizers hate the whip then imagine what they’d do if he got a light sentence with a buzzer! No sympathy here.

Roman Chapa got five years twice in two separate offenses, but that’s the maximum allowed in Texas law. Billy Patin got five years at Oaklawn for a similar offense.
