Horse of the Year 2016?
Who ya got?
Obviously California Chrome had a monster year, but he didn't win the BC Classic.
Arrogate set the track record at historic Saratoga over the Classic 10 panel distance, and under 2 minutes, and then fired back and beat Chrome on his home track in the BC Classic.
Tepin? Any love for the young lady? Went to Royal Ascot and romped. Fell just short in the BC Mile against the boys yet again. Incredible year after winning 8 in a row.

No Breathalyzer will ignore me and hate me but....
My vote is with Arrogate.
He won at Summerslam to get the attention and then at Wrestlemania's main event, he out manned the Champ.
Conversation over.

California Chrome is the Horse of the Year. This award doesn't necessarily go to the year's fastest horse. If it did...then Zenyatta wouldn't have won it in 2010.

You didn't fail, Tepin did in her last 2 races, which was foreseen.....It's how you finish.

Tepin won't even be third runner up.
CC has this one in the bag. Arrogate second. Beholder (the first horse in NA history to win a G1 at 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6) will round out the HOY candidates.

His campaign was far too short. It's hard to reward given that, when the other choice had a far longer campaign that included big races both here and in Dubai. I understand if someone thinks he's the better horse, but let's see if he continues to look unbeatable. It's funny how with racing comes losses, and with losses comes returning to earth.

Arrogate beat him on the square and hence I don't grasp how people can vote the other way. His last two races were the best mile and a quarter races anyone ran this year either sex.
Yeah Crome had a great year but beating a field of turf horses on the dirt means little. Frosted turned out to not be a classic distance horse. Dortmund was up the track in the mile.
So my beef is this. The whole "I know Arrogate beat him but Crome had a more impressive campaign" simply isn't true. Frosted and Dortmund ended up being frauds. In retrospect beating them simply wasn't as impressive as when it happened.
And then there's also this. If the voters are going to give it to Crome then the BC and Eclipse people need to get together and stop calling it Championships. Because if a bunch of racing writers are going to negate the results call it something else.

Tell that to Bayern, Blame, Awesome Again, Alphabet Soup, and Seattle Slew.
There was a lot made of Nyquist's undefeated campaign through the Kentucky Derby that sadly is all but forgotten now.
Had Nyquist's connections been more sensible with their late season campaign (e.g., had they rested their horse and pointed to the Malibu), Arrogate's lock on the 3yo title might not be so cut and dry either.

Well, I actually get a vote, but I'm not telling who it went for.

With such a voter criteria...no wonder the HOY results often leave us scratching our heads.
