In my lifetime, I think Northern Dancer was the all-time best.

Look at his sons and grandsons. Nijinsky, The Minstrel, Shareef Dancer, El Gran Senor, Be My Guest, Danzig, Lyphard, Nureyev, Saddlers Wells, Storm Bird and Vice Regent to name a few. Grandsons Danehill and Caerleon and Galeleo.

Won the Derby and the Preakness and Finished 3rd in the Belmont Stakes. The best period.

Oddly, Northern Dancer led the general side list just once. That's hard to believe.

Bold Ruler may've led the sides list the most.

The first group below shows all North American sires with at least 15 different G1SWs since 1983. Following the sire's name is the number of G1SWs, the year the sire was foaled, the number of foals, the sire's Average-Earnings-Index and the %G1SWs from foals. Those sires foaled before the 1980s probably have more G1SWs prior to 1983. After those sires are five more from an earlier era.

Tapit compares favorably with some on the list but not with A.P. Indy, Alydar, Danzig, Mr. Prospector, Seattle Slew, Storm Cat or any of the five earlier sires.

A.P. Indy, 29 (1989) 1184 2.89 2.4%
Alydar, 20 (1975) 689 5.07 2.9%
Danzig, 24 (1977) 1075 3.97 2.2%
Deputy Minister, 18 (1979) 1142 2.52 1.6%
Dynaformer, 17 (1985) 1308 2.26 1.3%
Giant's Causeway, 17 (1997) 1725 1.82 1.0%
Kris S., 15 (1977) 839 2.48 1.8%
Mr. Prospector, 32 (1970) 1178 3.98 2.7%
Seattle Slew, 24 (1974) 1050 3.66 2.3%
Smart Strike, 15 (1992) 1384 2.21 1.1%
Storm Cat, 27 (1983) 1414 2.95 1.9%
Tapit, 16 (2001) 932 2.37 1.7%
Theatrical, 15 (1982) 1021 2.23 1.5%
Unbridled's Song, 21 (1993) 1569 2.02 1.3%

Bold Ruler, 27 (1954) 356 7.73 7.6%
Bull Lea, 21 (1935) 377 4.37 5.6%
Northern Dancer, 21 (1961) 636 5.10 3.3%
Princequillo, 19 (1940) 480 3.31 4.0%
Ribot, 17 (1952) 418 2.74 4.1%

That's a weird list to include Dubawi at the top. I can't find it backed up by BH's lists of international stallions. It looks like an odd list that ranks just Europe, NA and Dubai.

In the past 50 years, Northern Dancer is the undisputed #1 sire. Mr. P and Danzig would probably rank 2nd and 3rd, then there's Storm Cat, Deputy Minister, A.P. Indy, etc. Giant's Causeway doesn't really get the respect he deserves.

Tapit will undoubtedly join them.

The Tapits have their flaws though. They're temperamental and it can get in the way of their talent. They don't seem to have great longevity either.
We should probably give Secretariat some credit as a broodmare sire. He was the broodmare sire to both AP Indy and Storm Cat, and was the broodmare sire of Giant's Causeway's sire.

Tapit considerably the "freshest" entry to that list. Suspect his stats may improve considerably based on win rate his offspring are recording.
One of the things I like most about Tapit is HIS sire, Pulpit. Wonderful line.

I still have 2 Mr Prospector horses. Both are gifted, fine horses I prize highly.
