The distance may have been a minor issue for Shanghai Bobby, but I think there's something wrong with the horse. He came back with what was arguably his best lifetime effort at 1 1/16th. (it was certainly at least good enough to think he was still the same horse). In this race he did almost no running at all on a day when Pletcher had similarly fresh lightly raced horses jumping out of their skin and running new lifetime bests. That he went backwards and is now being given time suggests something is amiss.
