He f'd up in the Holt interview. It's not a made up story by the media. It's not a deep state conspiracy. It's him saying stupid shit that guaranteed what we see going on today had to happen.

It is very defensible. It is all about the context and power. The media kept on reporting stories, which were false, keeping President Trump under a cloud of being an illegitimate president, due to criminal activity. Comey had information that would have stopped the false media reports and remove the cloud. Trump terminated Comey for not setting the record straight and removing the cloud of the Russia investigation from President Trump.
Any reasonable person would be frustrated by an employee who had information that would vindicate them and that employee refused to provide that information. Especially, in light of the employee's past actions willingly vindicating another.
The real question is why did Comey fail to vindicate the Administration? Was he trying to keep power over the President by keeping the cloud of suspicion?
