It's obvious Putin sees and knows what his future is if he doesn't build a military buffer and create better economic ties with China, Iran, and any other countries that are also adversaries of the US. His future is the loss of power and death.
Again, you can hate Putin and everything he stands for and still understand why we are really at war.
