He survived because Khrushchev.
The Soviets at the time were actually surprised at how belligerent the United States was about the stationing of missiles in Cuba. We had placed them in Turkey so they honestly thought it was simply a force match which would be reasonable action to maintain parity and deterrence. The United States' reaction was completely over the top and after repeated overtures by the USSR the conflict was finally able to de-escalate thanks to Khrushchev.

Exactly right. There is now a ton of international pressure on the regime and this is regardless of Trump-Talk. The passing of the UN security council on the 5th was already a large stepping stone passing 15-0 with large input from both Russia and China. This is what sparked the Regime's latest smack talk. One the President was all to foolishly willing to participate in.

United States Presidents are notoriously bad at
realpolitik. A few were decent; FDR, Teddy, Truman, and Nixon is king of the mountain. Recently you have the Bush II administration's horribly naive neo-conservative view of the world. You also have Obama drawing a red-line in Syria while getting pushed around by Putin during Russia's "coming out party." Most recently now you have a President who is willing to draw red-lines and engage a belligerent regime in foolish unproductive trash talk that only worsens a situation. Lets look at the international response;
1) China to NK: "Shut your mouth... enjoy these sanctions too." China to the US: "Tread lightly."
2) Japan, SK, NZ, and Australia to US: "Ummm... how about no."
Then we have actual facts from the Administration.
1) Our main policy objective here is to avoid conflict. (Tillerson qoutes)
2) We are in no position to actually fight this war. (Mattis quotes) Currently we only have one operational Carrier Battle Group in all of the Pacific (
USS Ronald Reagan). We used 5 during the Iraq war. The
Vinson is working up her new Air Wings in San Diego.
Roosevelt is conducting training off of California and
Stennis just completed sea trials after her latest rehab and is sitting in port in Washington.
So no... needlessly scaring the public. Accomplishing nothing but feeding his ego. And uselessly escalating a situation is not something I would consider giving him credit for.
