He claimed he stole it for the mother of a friend who was going to display it in her church. She was going to pay him $10,000 or pay his family $200,000 if he got caught. So, he was an idiot for thinking she would actually pay him the money; and he was an idiot for not realizing that if she offered to pay that much money there must be some danger in the attempted theft.
And he was an idiot for not realizing that in such a restrictive country, there would be cameras everywhere.
Why was he released, and did Trump have anything to do with it. I think he was released because he fell into a coma and the North Koreans finally decided he was more trouble than he was worth. In other words, Trump had nothing to do with it but of course he took credit.
Why is he in a coma? Warmbier's father claims it is because the North Koreans brutalized his son, but American doctor's who examined the son found no evidence of abuse. North Korea claimed it was botulism. Most like it was some illness exacerbated by poor medical treatment.
