In the time since you were last encountering problems, the site has been upgraded...SEVERELY upgraded.
Not only has the message board software been updated (and another update is to come shortly), but my entire SERVER has had its hardware upgraded.
We went from a 2GB ram box with a dual core (circa 2011) to a 16GB ram box with SSD drives and an EIGHT core processor. The hardware was upgraded on Tuesday evening.
Since that time, I haven't seen any slowdowns or crashes, the board is much more responsive and faster, and there have been no slowdowns or crashes reported to me by others.
I've also made an attempt to cut back on the number of "bots" and search engine spiders visiting here...so the user load should be smaller, but that wasn't what was contributing to the site's problems. It was the inferior hardware setup along with the old board software finally being choked to death.
I can confidently say that there will be no more problems like you've experienced recently.
