If it was a law, it would be a bad law and should be disobeyed.
Remember, there was a time slavery was legal. It was legal for a slave owner to sell slave babies. It was against the law to help a slave escape from his or her owner. Many people broke the law to help slaves escape.
People felt a moral obligation to break the law to rescue slaves.
Trump did NOT have the a law on his side that said he could separate the children. He realized it was bad policy. So he signed an executive order ending the practice.
It has been settled. Common sense and decency prevailed.

The 9th circuit recently determined that the law does just that. Forces the separation of the children from the parents.
