I had wondered why 6 furlong splits are so much slower at Mahoning than the same leader(s) would post at 5 or 5.5 furlongs. At some other tracks, the longer straight-run (and no elbow factoring into the initial fraction) result in comparatively quicker splits at the 6 fur distance.
Last week Mahoning's clocker, a friend of mine, cleared up the mystery by informing me that the actual run-up at 6 furlongs there is nearly non-existent.
As for Mahoning's route fractions, I generally ignore them and rely strictly on visual observation and a race's apparent speed content.
