How Does A Free Play Work?

I just got a $25.00 'Free Play' offer in my email today from a racebook i've bet with in the past. I've seen that kind of thing offered in some ADWS too. Pardon my ignorance, but I have no idea how that kind of offer works. Can someone explain it for me? For example, are you limited to just one bet of $25.00 in this instance on some horse race? (or casino, if the racebook is a branch of a online casino site)? If that's the case, are you allowed just one bet, win or lose?...If so, what happens to your 'Free Play" money if you win? Can you add the profit and the original stake to your horse betting account, or withdraw all the profit and the original stake?

Thanks for any help you can give to enlighten me on this subject.
