Norway has some of the highest taxes in the world. It has a VAT (sales tax) of 25%. Total taxes take over 45% of GDP, compared with 29% in the US. The government is the major share holder in most of the biggest corporate employers.
All of that money the government sucks out of the economy goes to providing a high quality of living for people on welfare.

Norway is # 5, the place is falling apart at the seams.
Edit: H4C beat me to it!!
Interesting to point out last year a Norway had it's first deficit in 20 years. It's been almost 20 years that the United States DIDN'T have a deficit.Apparently, they know how to avoid squandering money.
