Hong Kong Racing Recap
Date: January 17, 2018
Track: Happy Valley
Track Bias: None
Races that have become Key Races after today’s results: 269

Notes for the day:
Race 1 (347): 96 Out of the four first timers only Majestic Dragon (52) received any money in the wagering pools, Poor ride by Mo rushing Look Eras (57) into the duel going three wide instead of sitting right off of it and waiting for the duelers to tire out. The favourite winner Zero Hedge (59) was the recipient of the duel while saving ground on the turn, big move for the longshot Showing Character (50) after having to swing wide entering the stretch while on his wrong lead step.

Race 2 (348): 91 There was a line of five runners at the wire, but no excuses for the chalk Winning Controller (38) who had a perfect spot for the run home but just didn’t want to pass others, who had a more early stressful race than he did. Rising Power (22) was slow from the gate then became rank in the first turn, Happy Friendship (21) almost got up after a nice ride by Chadwick with the light weight of 113 versus the winners 133 pounds. Winner Amazing Always (45) is now 6 for 10 in Class 5, too bad he’s now retiring from racing, love ATM horses.

Race 3 (349): -94# The early pace was very pedestrianly slow, winner All Best Friends (65) outran the slight favourite Peace On Earth (44) while conceding 25 pounds and a more difficult trip, the pace setter Bingo (42) held on for a game second and Magic Success (50) closed well but too far back to make up the ground. Peace On Earth looked to be a quick pull up soon after the race.

Race 4 (350): -100 I was wrong in this one, thought there would be more pace for the winner Don’t Miss (60) but I guess the other riders didn’t listening, he was allowed to set a very slow pace and when The Judge (60) made his move going three wide in the turn was unable to catch him after that easy trip, stays in the Class 4 with picking up only 1 rating point.

Race 5 (351): 92 The pace in here like a lot of races in Hong Kong starts quickly early on then the brakes are slammed in the middle of the race, there have been complaints about it lately but it still continues. The betting choice High Volatility (58) looked to be in a good spot in the stretch but looked like he refused to split a couple runners, one of the two key race runners Istanbul Bay (51) put in a real nice effort only beaten by ¾ a length after going wide the entire trip. The winner Sangria (61) entered the stretch five wide in the back and caught them all just near the wire.

Race 6 (352): 104 A fast run Class 3 race on a slow track with an average pace early on, the winner Jade Theatre (79) made it two for the night for runners that were exiting dirt races and returning to the turf, it seems like there is always at least on a night at Happy Valley. Second place finisher Breeders’ Star (79) closed well in the stretch after having to slightly wait behind the winner for room and just ran out of real estate late, the favourite Royal Mojito (63) looked uncomfortable and was never asked by Prebble for an effort afterwards.

Race 7 (353): -100 Another five horse blanket finish with the winner Pretty Bauhinia (72) closing on the outside just getting up at the wire in a par final speed figure, looked mid-stretch that the longshot Play Wise (72) was going to get home but 100 metres out he began to tire and was just nipped. At the top of the lane Right Honourable (64) was hesitant in splitting two runners which may have cost him the win, he gathered himself well after he was given room and finished off gaining. The favourite Calculation (78) started leaning in at the top of the lane and threw in the anchor without showing any effort.

Race 8 (354): 101# Another start-stop-start pace, Berry on Who Else But You (77) took the lead then slammed everything down costing a few runners entering the turn to take up Cheerful Jet (67), Blaze Stamina (70) and Charity Glory (72). Star Of Joy (67) was a little slow out of the gate which really affected his usual running position near the front then soon afterwards became very rank in the short turn, while the big winner Flying Tourbillon (84) had a perfect trip sitting on the rail right behind the leaders and a hole opened up and scooted away while the favourite was running into trouble near the rail.

Horses to watch for next out list:
Race 5 (351) #2 Crown Avenue (59):After an impressive win paying $28 going 9 furlongs while breaking from the 12 hole, drew a more favourable post (#2) and was helped when the runner on the rail broke slow leaving him alone to get over and save ground in the turn but soon in the first turn had to take up when High Volatility slowed down in front of him. Recovered well afterwards until the stretch run where he was stuck behind a tiring front runner and the favourite who was refusing to split rivals. Rispoli was never allowed to get into him while being steadied and only to finished 2 ½ lengths off the winner.

Race 8 (354) #7 Cheerfuljet (67): In his first try up in Class 3 after two very nice wins at the lower level, broke well in front but was taken back soon afterwards by Callan and was allowed to sit off the two duelers on the lead. He became rank when Berry brought Who Else But You (77) into his path on the backside for around a 100 metres, then got in tight when Berry slammed on the brakes entering the turn. Started to split the tiring duelers at the 250 mark but they started drifting in and out and pinched him backwards as soon as he was in the gap, finally at the 150 mark Callan had to stand up in the irons and surrender his position, the staple was put in at that mark for that effort, it cost Whyte two racing days for the incident.
