Did anyone ever figure out how Joe Drape and the New York Times got onto this story, 15 months after the race?

Drape's article talks about having reviewed documents and notes that "only a handful of racing officials and people connected to Justify knew about the failed drug test." No one in either group would seem to have a motive for telling Drape about it, and they seemed to be doing a good job of keeping it quiet for 15 months.

Was there a "Deep Throat"? Was this something that the racing media (DRF, BH, etc.) should have been able to find?
