Olympic medal count.
I’d like to start a discussion of which country is “winning “ the Olympics. Currently the United States has the most overall medals with 31, but Japan has the most Gold. Most news sources say the US is winning, but that would mean that finishing third is just as good as finishing first. An idea I will strongly support when I present my win ticket on a horse which finished third.
On the other hand just counting gold medals diminishes the accomplishment of those who finished second and third. Years ago, some newspapers had a points system. 10 for Gold 5 for Silvet and 2 or 3 for Bronze. What would you think of such a system now? What values would you assign each medal and why?
Then there is the question,”Are all gold medals equal?” Vastly more countries (and people) participate in Track and Field, Swimming,Gymnastics, Soccer and Basketball, than participate in aArchery, Tae Keon do and badminton. Why should all those Sports have Gold Medals of equal value?
