Day money at the very best allows a trainer to break even.
There are three ways a trainer can make serious money and become comfortable financially.
1) Commissions and appreciation dollars from buying and selling horses.
2) Successfully gambling on their own horses.
3) Purse money. 10% which unlike jocks in most cases is 10% all the way across the board.
It is EXTREMELY hard to stay afloat as a trainer. EXTREMELY!
The people getting rich at the races are vendors.
Vets, farriers, feed men, tack stores, jocks agents.
IMO it's safe to say that being a horseman, perhaps more so than any vocation I've ever seen, is TRULY a labor of love!
