Hong Kong Racing Recap
Date: April 8, 2018
Track: Sha Tin
Track Bias: None
Races that have become Key Races after today’s results: 455, 474, 508 & 552

Notes for the day:
Race 1 (548): Massive Move (48) was at least 3 lengths slow at the start. The first time starter Superich (62) was bet down as the favourite, sat behind a three horse duel and when Moreira pushed the button he quickly accelerated away from the field, has the look of a real nice runner. Team Spirit (53) another first time runner was also played in the windows, but was caught in the early duel and had nothing left for the advancing winner. Magic Success 44() had no response either at the 350 mark for the winner and threw in the towel pretty easily.

Race 2 (549): Happy Friendship (26) was a little slow out of the gate, and unfortunately broke down nearing the wire, Sanna’s ride City Winner (30) couldn’t avoid him and fell unseating the Italian rider. Winner Glenealy Prize (39) at the top of the backside was asked by Moreira to join in and within 300 metres had gone from the back to the lead and just held on to the wire after the incident in the stretch. Hall Of Fame (28), Empire Of Mongolia (20) and Best Jade Triumph (18) were extremely wide thru out their trips.

Race 3 (550): Longshot winner Ho Ho Feel (66) saved ground in the turn and after some traffic issues in the stretch ran away from this ordinary field for an impressive run. Bullish Glory (58) closed in the stretch after breaking a couple lengths slow. Let Us Win (58) had no excuse not to run a better race, sat right behind a two horse duel with no one looking him in the eye. Hay Run (59) ran a descent third after doing his usual slow breaking from the gate.

Race 4 (551): Longshot Borntoachieve (65) leaped out of the gate losing a couple lengths to the field and was never heard from again. Solar Patch (75) in his first run in Hong Kong for John Moore raced three wide in the turn and outran Wishful Thinker (81) who had all kinds of trouble finding running room when it counted. Lean Perfection (80) saved ground and just wasn’t fast enough to get up. Triumphant Jewel (63) was four wide without cover, Top Beautiful (67) looked to be in a striking position early in the lane but either wouldn’t split runners or the hole was moving faster than he was. Intrepic (63) put in a very nice effort after only losing by a ½ length in his first race since late January.

Race 5 (552): These 1,650 metre races on the dirt should be limited to ten entries, it’s too short of a run to the first turn for anybody breaking in the outer post. Open House (54), Enreaching (51) and Elusive Star (49) were doomed at the draw and raced extremely wide in both turns, after travelling wide in the first turn Wong on Pearl Warm Warm (38) tried the same move Moreira tried in the second but his steed wasn’t able to get him home. Co-top weight winner Crown Avenue (63) raced in the rear until the second turn, Purton moved him to the outside and out finished Go Go Win (58) and Speedy Wally (46) (the later galloped out past the winner soon after the wire full of run) who both had easier trips to the wire.

Race 6 (553): Faithful Trinity (62) shied out when he got into a tight spot soon after the break, later in the stretch looked like he may want to get up but couldn’t find running room until the race was decided, take a good look at him next time out. The winner Jolly Gene (85) saved ground sitting just a little off the pace sitter, was all dressed up with nowhere to go, then when room became available he out finished Tai Smart (62) who was light weight and probably was just a little too far back early on to make up the difference. Dynamic Eagle (69) and Green Energy (78) both had no excuses, they had the jump first on the winner while he was being trapped and still couldn’t hold on. Rule Thee (76) lacked the needed kick late after racing very rank on the backside.

Race 7 (554): GII The Sprint Cup: Born In China (111) and Not’listin’tome (114) both looked uncomfortable while racing in the turns, our winner Beat The Clock (125) raced in the rear moved to the 3 path in the turn and outran everyone to the wire. Rawiller on Mr Stunning (129) looked to have been a little over confident in his ride at the top of the stretch and was out finished when he realised he was in trouble. Not one of Schofield’s best rides to date either, looked to be in contention but was hesitant in going into a hole, Winner’s Way (115) with Purton on the other hand put in the effort to get into it and it almost was a winning move, he just didn’t have the needed horsepower to get up.

Race 8 (555): GII The Chairman’s Cup: Pakistan Star (123) looked like he was going to balk again but after some serious urging on the backstretch by Moreira he did continue to run and closed to finish only a little more than a length off the winner, he’s got me real confused. Purton on Time Warp (127) went a little faster in the early part than he probably wanted, what with Fifty Fifty (123) breathing on him for the first 600 metres. The longshot winner Beauty Only (123) raced near the back of the pack then moved to the outside and out finished them all, very frustrating watching a horse I had on a watch list earlier in the meet get up paying $74 to win! Western Express (122) might have been the winner if not he ran into a tight spot at the 200 metre mark when Helene Paragon (123) began to tire and drifted outwardly causing Rawiller too check up on him slightly.

Race 9 (556): Five runners all tried for the lead early on and eventually it did them all in, and while this was going on sitting in the cat bird seat was Bravo Watchman (90) with Moreira waiting for them to collapse but unfortunately for him he was outrun to the wire by longshot Marvel Tribe (96) who closed in the middle of the track. Gunnison (85), My Little Friend (79) and Key Witness (86) also closed after the duel late but were never in a shape to catch the winner.

Race 10 (557): Hang’s Decision (75) leaped out of the gate conceding a couple lengths to the field. The longshot (another one) winner Roundabout (74) was rank on the backside while racing near the rear of the field while two eventual quitters were setting very slow early fractions, he moved to the outside in the stretch and under a hard ride by Schofield was able to get by Yeung and Coby Boy (81) under the shadow of the wire. Starship (62) was caught up in the traffic mid-stretch and was gaining late when he had room to run, as was Chung Wah Spirit (74) after going wide in the turn.

Horses to watch for next out list:
Race 1 (548) #8 Team Spirit (53): In his debut race was bet down as the second betting choice at 2-1, broke well and dueled in between runners while the eventual winner favourite Superich (62) raced right behind them in the garden spot. Finally at the 300 metre mark he was engaged by the winner and didn’t have a response for him, but did handle the rest of the field with ease.

Race 4 (551) #2 Wishful Thinker (81): Went off as the second betting choice at 2-1 and was a length slow while breaking on the rail, he then raced a little closer than his usual running position. Pass the midway point down the backside he began to climb while looking for clear running room, when he entered the stretch he was full of energy, but was totally hemmed in with no place to go. He commenced to raise his head while trying to find a gap, when room became available he was gaining on the winner at the wire but was just was a little short. Unfortunately he picked up 2 rating points for a total of 81 points, so unless Gibson can find a 85 point Class 3 race he’ll be a light weight in Class 2 next out.

Horses to avoid next out:
None
