Also, for whatever reason, it's just something Americans don't do. They are not very common throughout our history aside from victory parades.

Precisely my point. Honoring our veterans or those currently serving is fine
as a part of a larger celebration or parade.
What Trump is proposing is an arrogant look at me and all my toys parade.
Also Trump wanted to have a military power parade as part of his inauguration. No other president has ever tried to do that.
