The ones thankful to Trump are the top people in the Chinese government. The last thing they wanted was the bad PR of holding American athletes in prison, especially minorities. Letting them go after they were arrested would have been a sign of weakness.
Trump gives them an excuse to get them out of their hair and lets the Chinese look magnanimous at the same time. And gives Trump an actual achievement from his trip.
That and what Trump modestly called the greatest red carpet treatment on his tour that anyone ever got.
