It may surprise some on here but here is my official reaction to the summit:
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
It wasn't good or bad but it was a start.
Its pretty obvious that real tangible agreement is quite a long ways off since the joint statement issued was extremely vague. Nothing was really accomplished aside from opening channels of communication and the possibility of further talks.
In a perfect world the North Koreans would have agreed to do something specific in return for something specific from the United States. I suggested signing the NTBT and/or NPT. They don't really apply in this case but its a start. Additionally, a concrete commitment to talks in the future. IE Time and Place.
It didn't happen because obviously we are quite far apart still which is fine so you issue the vague joint statement and move on.
The only mistake the President made in these talks so far was the suspension of joint military efforts with our allies in the region. I posted the video and it certainly appears that was off-script. The reason why its a mistake is because you just issued a SUPER VAGUE statement on purpose... to allow room to maneuver. You don't make that statement and then publicly give away a VERY SPECIFIC concession.
They may have talked about it privately but its not in the statement so saying that publicly was a mistake.
Other than that not much was accomplished. It may end up leading to something great or may end up fizzling out into nothing. Its obvious we aren't close right now and that's fine these things take time. So...
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Unless someone has some specific thing the North Koreans agreed to as a result of the summit.
