Sweet nostalgia for me. Names like Numbered Account, Silent Screen and Shuvee headlining Morning Telegraph editions that cost a quarter. My trek to obtain a copy was 5 miles, sometimes in frigid temps, from a PA town called Leetsdale to the newstand in Sewickley. Unlike today's form, it was cut like a newspaper and folded in half.
How fat and deliciously illicit it felt, this encoded gateway to an enthralling new world that even then moved inexorably towards dominating my existence. Homework, baseball, and even friends seemed far less important by the time my pile of copies sat just coffee table high. It would take years, however, for me to realize what the true price on those forms had been....everything. And it still seems like a bargain.
When I think back on those days, I feel young and excited that there is much more to learn.
