It's mostly about comfort and it effects almost everyone.
Virtually every immigrant group in the US has tended to settle with others similar to themselves. That's why in NYC for example we have had neighborhoods that were/are mostly Polish, German, Italian, Irish, Jewish, Muslim, Indian, Asian, Hispanic, black, white, etc... People tend to group by race, religion, nationality, etc.. not because of feelings of superiority, but because of language, music, food, and overall culture. They want to feel comfortable and tend to feel most comfortable with people similar to themselves or that they may already know.
The downside is that people that are comfortable start feeling uncomfortable when people of other cultures start moving in and threatening to change what they are comfortable with.
That creates friction. Ethnic and racial issues are nothing new.
Some people then go off the deep end trying to protect their comfort.
The vast majority of immigration into this country lately has been and continues to be non European. The left is encouraging it (for votes) and the right is not doing much about it (for cheap labor).
So you are going to get pockets of discomfort, friction, and occasional violence, especially if crime, jobs and other issues are a factor.
None of this is hard to understand or predict if you are living in the real world and not living in some left wing idealistic la la land. It's been happening for over a century here and continues here and elsewhere.
It takes a LONG time for assimilation to occur and for that comfort level to expand. It's not just about "white" and "non white" except in the minds of left wing dirt bags trying to make it all about race.

Humans are flawed in many ways.
one thing on the list = individuals or in-groups think that every 'thing' and every advantage they have is due to merit, genetics, god, etc (merit based privilege)...
while SIMULTANEOUSLY believing ever thing better than what they have, and/or every disadvantage over what they have is due to either their personal nonpreference or to Favoritism/cronyism/nepotism (non merit-based models) preventing them.
it's a stupid coping mechanism in our flawed brains, and it's also abused/manipulated by the powerful and by private predatory markets to polarize in general, and specifically the disenfranchised.
also, generally if you take everything from a human and scare them we tend to organize by things like race and religion (eg prison populations). Such, the powerful and the predatory know that this is a fertile ground to manipulate
