The article explains why such a preposterous story has taken such a hold on certain people. It says that the whole thing was started by people trolling on sites such a 4chan and reddit.
Looking at the emails leaked by WikiLeaks, they decided to make ridiculous unsubstantiated claims such as that pizza orders were code for child molestation. Any sensible person would see this for what it is. But when you combine the paranoia of the Trumpists with the sexual repression of some religious conservatives you have a perfect breeding ground for this insanity.
You are familiar I am sure with the psychological phenomenon known as projection, in which a person takes the failing that he most despises about himself and projects that onto another person so that he can attack that
failing without admitting to himself that it is his failing.
Thus it is that we have so many examples of politicians who preach morality and cheat on their spouses; of priests who rail against promiscuity and abuse children; of TV evangelists who extol the family and consort with prostitutes.
I am not saying that anyone on this forum has ever any sexual activity with any children. (Although, considering that there are thousands of members that is a possibility. I do say that some of those, having fleeting, unbidden thoughts of that nature, are attacking others as a way of proving to themselves that they are pure.
One of the more interesting portions of the article told of how some posters, in an effort to bring attention to this fake scandal, found and posted pictures depicting child pornography. They have been arrested and charged, Whether they will convince the courts that there motives were honorable is questionable. On the other hand, shouldn't terminal stupidity be a punishable offense?
