I've seen this phenomenon before. Sometimes when very rich men get a little older and have "F You" money, they stop holding back on what they think because they stop caring what other people might think or how it might impact their earnings power. He's a little young to be at that stage, but he does have the money to both finance a lengthy campaign the way Ross Perot did and he also doesn't seem to give a crap what people think anymore.
Really, what he's saying is not far out of line. He just said it in the worst possible way. If he would have simply said something like "To be successful in the US economy at this time requires significant education and skills. Many of the illegal immigrants from Mexico are not coming into the country with college degrees that will prepare them for high tech jobs, jobs in finance etc... They are illegals that are under-educated and that have few of the skills required to be successful. So they are putting an extra burden on already stressed social services, police, border patrols, health care facilities, etc.. that are needed by US citizens and immigrants that are here legally".
Same thing without the craziness.
