You can save as XLS while in Open Office. I do it all the time as I am too cheap to pay for MS Office at home and actually like OO a lot more.
When you do a SAVE AS -- click down under FIle type and save as .xlsx or .xls -- that way your recipient can open easy.
No need for XLS converters or anything.
