Hong Kong Racing Recap
Date: January 24, 2018
Track: Sha Tin (AWT)
Track Bias: None
Races that have become Key Races after today’s results: 274 & 289

Notes for the day:
Race 1 (365): 91 Second place finisher Rugby Diamond (33) was probably used up a little more than what Sanna would have liked, but he had no choice after drawing the 11 hole, it set it up for another longshot Helen’s Choice (40) who just got up near the wire after Ho really had to get into him. The standby runner G-One Union (40) mad a nice move in the stretch but was just a little too far back entering the stretch to make up the ground, he did gallop out past the top three after the wire (he’s re-entered in the first race Saturday). Moreira’s ride Dynamic Lions (21) put in another poor effort after being jostled around soon after the start.

Race 2 (366): +97 Usual front runner Flying Godspell (52) was a little slow into the going after the start then was bumped on the outside forcing him behind runners and true chances were gone at that moment. The winner Happy Happy Star (66) broke from the far outside, got away well and was able to get to the rail with ease and coasted to a visually impressive win in a final time that was a little slower than normal for the class. Mi Blanco (41) got the big weight advantage but raced wide and was too far back when the winner was getting away but a nice finishing kick none the less. Primero (57) from The John Moore barn who usually likes to be near the lead but was unable to in here was quickly grabbed up by Berry after the wire.

Race 3 (367): 94 The favourite with Moreira on board Amazing Race (59) broke a little tardy on the rail, then when trying to make up some ground while the winner was getting away he bumped the tiring front runner at the 170 metre mark pretty hard and was done after that. Winning Supreme (55) got a nice weight allowance at 115 and used every bit of it to hold off a charging second time starter Elite Boy (54) for Freedman, who might have gotten up if he would have changed to his proper lead step, both looked like they wanted to continue to run after the finish line.

Race 4 (368): +93 A poor ride by the bug boy Poon on Winningli (22), went 5 wide in the first turn then rushed up into a hot duel while continuing to go three wide the entire trip, considering the trip he didn’t finish all that poorly but did look spent in the gallop out. On the other hand a perfect ride by Purton on the winner Victory Follow Me (40) who sat right off the fast duel moved to the outside entering the stretch and quickly drew away from the field for his first win after 28 tries, he only had one making somewhat of a challenge, Furious Pegasus (37) but he just wasn’t fast enough to get to him.

Race 5 (369): 97 A very nice ride by the bug boy almost milking home Beauty Connection (50) home after getting a nice front running trip, but it just looks like this guy just doesn’t want to hold on. He now has 7 in the money runs out of 22 tries but just can’t seem to break the duck in Hong Kong. Winner Chater Thunder (55) repeated his effort after getting up in his previous race at 59-1, he didn’t pay that much here but still not too bad at 9-1 for a runner who had the highest speed figure in their last race on the dirt.

Race 6 (370): 100 The dirt specialist Willie Way (73) had to be taken up half-way thru the first turn when he almost clipped heals with Sharp Sailor (73). Gran Master (65) was extremely wide in the first turn by Badel was adamant on getting the lead, he obtained it by the time they got to the backside, was slightly pressured by Mo on Little Dragon (78) (who was eventually was eased at the wire). In the turn for home the field really bunched up forcing at least six runners to go extremely wide on the turn, while all this was going on the chalk was buying his time on the rail saving all the ground. When the front runner separated from Mo on Little Dragon (who drifted out a little) entering the stretch it gave our hero Prawn Baba (92) an opening he needed and quickly pounced on the opportunity and drew away without much of a challenge.

Race 7 (371): 101 Winner Almababy (89) took advantage of the drop in class, just getting up at the wire catching the favourite Winning Vangogh (80) who had just come off the Vet’s list and as usual didn’t get to his proper lead step late in the stretch and really went tippy-toed allowing the winner time to get up. Big Time Baby (83) put in his usual good effort on the dirt, the disappointing runner was Pakistan Baby (61) who looked very uninterested in running today.

Race 8 (372): +99 Purton on Friends Of Ka Ying (78) was all about getting the lead after going 4 wide in the first turn, eventually he paid the price for it tiring badly late, pretty much being eased for the last 200 metres. Longshot winner Jade Fortune (79) had a perfect trip racing on the rail in both turns, got an opening just as soon as they reached the stretch, dug in and drew away from the field with plenty in the tank.

Thank God that day is finished, hate those all dirt race days!

Horse to watch for next out list:
Race 6 (370) #7 Willie Way (73): Has a preference for running on the dirt much more than he does on the turf, settled near the rear going two wide in the first turn but a little more than half-way had to be taken up seriously when it looked as if Sharp Sailor (73) came into his path. Was 5 wide entering the second turn, moved even wider when they reached the stretch all the while looking full of run but was never going to catch the high weight favourite Prawn Baba (92) for John Size.

Horse to avoid next out:
Race 1 (365) #3 Helen’s Choice (40): Was all out (was hit 11 times by Ho in the stretch) to catch the lone speed longshot in a below par final time Class 5 race.
