Bertrand Russell was a brilliant man, particularly in Mathematics when he was young.
His
autobiography is a truly wonderful read wherein he confesses to various weaknesses and lusts in his flirtations with the opposite sex.
Having said that, I had a close friend years ago who was quite scholarly.
He found
14 errors in just one chapter of
Russell's book
The History of Philosophy. As that friend went on he found many more errors.
So while Russell was indeed very bright, there were some areas of his scholarship that were lacking.
Why didn't he stick to Mathematics?
As I recall he confessed to "burning out" in that area before he was 30.
