The only sensible counter to that was that over time we might develop treatments and vaccines that would mitigate the health cost if you just locked down until those vaccines and treatments arrived.
It would appear that both are true.
The vaccines are mitigating some of the health costs but the harder you locked down and damaged your economy early the harder you are getting hit now with Covid despite the vaccine because it takes a long time to vaccinate and some economies were already in shambles and had to open up to some degree.
