One of the things I've been saying from the start is that the harder and longer you lock down and delay the spread, the longer and more severe the spread will be at a later date. You are simply delaying the inevitable spread. Much of the economic carnage may be pointless since you can't lock down forever.
The only sensible counter to that was that over time we might develop treatments and vaccines that would mitigate the health cost if you just locked down until those vaccines and treatments arrived.
It would appear that both are true.
The vaccines are mitigating some of the health costs but the harder you locked down and damaged your economy early the harder you are getting hit now with Covid despite the vaccine because it takes a long time to vaccinate and some economies were already in shambles and had to open up to some degree.
