Despite all the superb things he did on the field he will be remembered mostly for two goals he scored in one match against England in the 1986 World Cup Quarter Final when Argentina knocked out England and went on to win the tournament.
For obvious reasons the match was always going to be tense with animosity between the two teams and it turned out to be one of the most controversial matches of all time. Over 100,000 in the stadium. The first goal he scored was the famous handball goal where he punched the ball in the goal with the referee about the only person in the world 'who didn't see it'. The second though was one of the best goals (if not the best) you will ever see. Even the second goal was controversial as moments before one of the England players was cynically hacked down right in front of the referee who did nothing and that allowed him to get the ball. We mustn't let that take away from the actual goal itself though where he took the ball in his own half and weaved round several England players before slotting the ball in. Sheer brilliance. He later admitted he cheated for the first goal and called it the 'hand of god'.
Not a popular man in England but most here will still mourn the loss of a man with an extraordinary talent.
Here are those two goals.
